Deer and Doe Myosotis

So, the Myosotis dress. I am so late making this pattern. It’s one of those that I liked the look of, but thought it was a bit trendy, a bit of a fad and it didn’t grab me initially like it seemed to grab the rest of the sewing community.

Now I’ve made it, I wish I had made it sooner. This is a great little pattern. It’s pretty simple (the skirt and ruffles are just rectangles) but it is well designed and proportioned. I can see now why it has been so hugely popular and I instantly want to make several more.

This version was made in a mint / sage green double gauze that I bought here. I think it’s called pastel green, but there are so many colours available. I have worked with double gauze before, several years ago, but not very successfully. I have seen so many tiered double gauze dresses around this summer, that I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to finally try this pattern.

I had been warned by a friend (who made a double gauze Myosotis just before me) that the collar could be a bit floppy, but I interfaced mine and so far it’s standing up well.

This pattern came together easily. The gathering is the most annoying bit. I hate gathering and usually struggle to get it even. I sew 2 lines of gathering stitches, one just within the seam allowance and one just outside it. Double gauze gathers really nicely though, I think the loose weave of the fabric helps the threads to slide through it.

The most annoying thing about double gauze is it can be quite shifty and warp out of shape easily. I think some of my seams are pretty bendy, but on a loose dress like this with plenty of volume it doesn’t seem too noticeable.

I don’t think there is much else to say about this dress, apart from I love it! I am so gutted I made this at the end of summer, but there is always next year! I’d like to make a winter appropriate one next, I think if I leave the ruffles off the sleeves and make it from a darker coloured viscose it would be great with a cardi or jumper and tights…
